The Pharma/Med-Tech industry has the highest female representation at the non-management level of any industry or sector. However, moving up the management ranks, the representation of women decreases to a mere 28% at the top management level.
The industry is keeping a reasonably balanced gender representation at lower management levels, thanks to promotions and new hires. However, the advancement to middle and top management levels is different for women because promotions and especially new hires are lower than the female representation at the lowest and lower management levels. This indicates that Pharma/Med-Tech companies are not fully taking advantage of their gender-diverse talents.
The Pharma/Med-Tech industry has a relatively low GCI. However, women still seem to face difficulties advancing to middle and top management as they are underrepresented in those levels.
With a 12 percentage points difference in employment percentage between non-management and top management, it becomes apparent that women must renounce part-time work to advance their careers, though less so than in some other industries. Men, on the other hand, show almost no part-time work. If part-time continues to be more common for women than for men, the female workforce will continue to see a substantial underrepresentation as the career progresses.
